Secretor status as a genetic marker in duodenal ulcer--a comparative study.

چکیده
It has long been established that various human body secretions like saliva, semen, gastric juice contain blood group antigens. The individuals whose body fluids other than blood contain blood group antigens are known as secretors whereas the rest are nonsecretors. The secretor status of an individual is a genetically controlled factor. The role of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of duodenal ulcer is well established. Support for hereditary tendency in duodenal ulcer is contributed by the occurrence of duodenal ulcer in both members of the monozygotic twins. This observation was strengthened by a significant association between blood group "O" and duodenal ulceration. Clarke found a higher frequency of non-secretors in duodenal ulcer patients than in controls. This study reports the secretor status of endoscopically proven cases of duodenal ulcer and apparently healthy controls and comparisons of our results with those reported by other investigators.

Influence of the secretor and Lewis genes on susceptibility to duodenal ulcer.
Human duodenal mucosal cells have been examined by mixed-cell agglutination for the presence of bloodgroup antigens. The secretor status of the patients has been determined, and in a proportion of cases gastric juice as well as saliva has been studied. Mixed-cell agglutination has also been performed on the buccal cells from a percentage of subjects as a control of technique. The results indica...

secretion (Clarke et al., 1956; Doll et al., 1961) is firmly established. Thus the family studies of Doll and Kellock (1951), which showed evidence of a hereditary factor in duodenal ulcer, have been substantiated by identification of two of the responsible genetic loci-namely, those for the genes determining ABO blood group and salivary ABH secretor status. Though the underlying mechanisms whe...
متن کاملStudy of duodenal ulcer disease in 100 families using total serum pepsinogen as a genetic marker.
Although various markers have been used in attempts to elucidate the mode of inheritance of duodenal ulcer, they have not significantly contributed to a clear understanding of the problem. In the present study total serum pepsinogen was used as a genetic marker and its concentrations were estimated in 100 ulcer patients and their family members up to three generations. Eighty three per cent of ...
متن کاملSecretor status and Helicobacter pylori infection are independent risk factors for gastroduodenal disease.
The hypothesis that non-secretors of ABO blood group antigens, a group shown to be more susceptible to certain bacterial infections, may be at greater risk of gastroduodenal disease because of increased susceptibility to Helicobacter pylori infection was investigated. Of 101 patients with symptoms of dyspepsia who were undergoing endoscopy, 32% were non-secretors (determined from Lewis blood gr...
متن کاملInfluence of the ABO blood group and salivary ABH secretor status on the cell-removing effect of aspirin on human gastric mucosa.
EDITORIAL COMMENT The association of duodenal ulcer with blood group 0 and salivary ABH non-secretion, and the apparent increased likelihood of bleeding in patients of blood group 0 with duodenal ulcer, are not understood. A new approach to the problem is provided by this carefully executed investigation which demonstrates an interaction between blood group and secretor status, and cell loss fr...
